Mountain scenes can be used to decorate everything from wedding cakes to groom’s cakes or even baby shower cakes. We couldn’t think of anyone better to show you how to create one than Colorado-based cake designer Rachael Teufel. In this Premium lesson, Rachael will show you how to create a beautiful mountain landscape with an airbrush machine.

If you have watched Airbrush Basic Techniques, then you know Rachael recommends practicing on paper to get a feel for the design before taking it to the cake. In this lesson, Rachael demonstrates on a board covered in fondant and discusses the little nuances of working on fondant vs. paper. She starts by creating her own custom stencil from cardstock.

From there, she loads up her airbrush machine and creates a horizon line that everything else builds on. Utilizing her custom stencils, she shows you how to create a sun and mountain range by varying the template and creating with depth. Watch and learn as she layers browns, blues, yellow, oranges, and greens to bring the landscape to life.

Rachael includes valuable pointers on cleaning and drying your airbrush machine properly; avoiding oversaturating colors, drips, and beading on fondant; blocking designs and dealing with overspray and paint splatters; and utilizing full color vs. diluted. She also gives tips on troubleshooting common problems with small portable air compressors. Rachael finishes off her design by creating some life and depth in the foreground with two little trees.

Rachael encourages you to grab your airbrush machine and practice keeping constant air flow and adjusting the paint and distance to create a beautiful landscape design of your own! For more beginner airbrush techniques, check out Rachael’s video on Airbrushing with Stencils.
